The Assam Judicial Services Exam is a state-level examination conducted by the Gauhati High Court for the recruitment of Civil Judges in the state judiciary. The exam is conducted in three stages - preliminary examination, main examination, and viva-voce.

The eligibility criteria for the Assam Judicial Services Exam include a Bachelor's degree in Law from a recognized university and the age of the candidate should not be less than 21 years and more than 43 years. However, there are age relaxations for certain categories of candidates.

The syllabus for the Assam Judicial Services Exam includes topics such as the Indian Evidence Act, Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, Code of Civil Procedure, Constitution of India, and General Knowledge. The exam pattern for the preliminary exam includes multiple-choice questions, while the main exam consists of descriptive type questions.

Candidates who qualify for the Assam Judicial Services exam are appointed as Civil Judges in the state judiciary. As a Civil Judge, the candidate will be responsible for hearing and deciding cases in civil and criminal matters. Eligibility and Age Limit – Assam Judicial Service Exam Grade III

Eligibility :
A candidate must be a citizen of India and must be holder of a Degree in Law from a recognized University established by law in India. (I.e. LLB degree from a BCI recognized College / University and eligible to practice as an Advocate in India.)

Age Limits :
Category wise Maximum age limits for AJS Grade-Ill, as on the last date of online application are :

  • General Candidates : 38 years
  • SC/ST Candidates : 43 years
  • PWD (Persons with disabilities) 48 years

Overall Exam Scheme & Selection Process – Assam Judicial Service Exam Grade III – 2022 and 2023

a) The Competitive Examination shall consist of a Preliminary Examination (Screening Test), a Main (Written) Examination and a Viva Voce/Interview.

b) The candidates who will secure 60% or more marks in the Preliminary Examination shall be eligible for appearing in the Main Examination:
Provided that the ratio on the basis of which the candidates will be called for the Main (Written) Examination shall be 1:10 (for one post 10 candidates will be called).

c) All candidates who obtain 60% or more aggregate marks in the 2022 and 2023 Main Written Examination subject to securing at least 45% marks in individual Paper-1, II, III & IV and minimum 35% marks in the Official language paper (Paper V) shall be eligible for Viva Voce. Provided that Schedule Caste/ Schedule Tribe candidates who obtain 50% or more aggregate marks in the Main Written Examination subject to securing minimum 40% marks in individual Paper-I, II, III & IV and minimum 35% marks in the language paper (Paper-V) shall be called for Viva Voce.

d) The marks secured in the language paper shall be qualifying in nature and shall not be counted in the aggregate marks secured by the candidates in the examinations for the purpose of final selection.

The ratio in which the candidates wilt be called for viva voce/interview is 1:3 (3 candidates against 1 post) subject to marks obtained as stated above.

Interview/Viva Voce: 50 Marks. The candidates shall have to secure minimum 60% marks in the interview.

Screening test of objective questions of 100 marks, out of which 90 marks will cover

  • General Knowledge, Aptitude, English,
  • Constitution of India,
  • Code of Civil Procedure,
  • Code of Criminal Procedure,
  • Transfer of Property Act,
  • Indian Contract Act,
  • Indian Penal Code,
  • Indian Evidence Act,
  • Law of Torts

Remaining 10 marks to test the proficiency in the Official Language(s) of the State of Assam (Assamese).

  • Interview/ Viva-voce : 50 marks.
  • Candidates will have to score at least 60% marks (30 Marks) to be eligible for the final selections
  • The final rankings will be based on the aggregate scores of the Main Exam Papers (except Language Papers) and the Interview Marks
