Eligibility to become a Teacher
For anyone aspiring to become a teacher in India, they need to have a B.Ed or bachelor's degree in education. One can also add to their qualification by pursuing a master's degree (M.Ed). This will help in increasing one's employability.
- Aspiring candidate must have a B.Ed with a minimum aggregate of 55%, which is required to become a teacher. However, the candidate must keep in mind that the past percentage varies from school to school.
- Along with a B.Ed degree, some of the schools ask for a master's degree in their respective fields for teaching in higher classes.
- There are several state and national level examinations for admission into B.Ed programs.
Apart from B.Ed and M.Ed, a candidate can also opt for the Basic Training Certificate (BTC) or Teacher Training Certificate or Diploma in Education (D.Ed) depending on one's interest.
In India, for different levels, different skills, qualifications and abilities are required.
- Pre-Primary School Teacher – Aspirants can pursue either Nursery Teachers Training (NTT) which is a one year or Diploma in Early Childhood Education (D.E.C.Ed.) after class 12th which is a two year program.
- Primary School Teacher – Aspirants can pursue any one of the following courses – Bachelor's in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) which is a four years, Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) two years program or Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) two years program.
- Secondary School Teacher – Bachelor's in Education degree (B.Ed) is a two year program.
- Senior Secondary School Teacher – Aspirants must have a postgraduate degree in a teaching subject (non-professional, degree courses) along with a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree. Aspirants can pursue post-graduation in any discipline.
- Special Educator – After completing graduation, aspirants needs to pursue a Bachelor's in Education (B.Ed), specializing in Special Education.

The UPPSC GIC Lecturer Recruitment Exam is conducted every year by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission to select the most deserving candidates for the post of Lecturer in a Government Inter College in Uttar Pradesh. It is conducted in two stages Preliminary and Main and a final interview is conducted to check the eligibility of candidates for the job position.
