The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a range of examinations aimed at recruiting candidates for prestigious services in the government. 1. Civil Services Examination (CSE)

  • Purpose: This is the most prominent exam conducted by UPSC for recruitment to Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other central government services.
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Preliminary Examination: Objective-type questions (General Studies & CSAT).
    • Main Examination: Descriptive-type papers (General Studies, Optional Subjects, Essay).
    • Personality Test (Interview): For selected candidates after the Mains.
  • Eligibility: Graduation in any discipline; age limit: 21 to 32 years (with relaxation for SC/ST/OBC).

2. Indian Forest Service Examination (IFoS)

  • Purpose: This exam is for recruitment to the Indian Forest Service.
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Preliminary Exam: General Studies and CSAT.
    • Main Exam: Includes General Studies, Indian Language, and Optional Subjects (e.g., Botany, Zoology, Forestry).
    • Interview: For candidates who clear the Mains.
  • Eligibility: Degree in Science or Engineering, with a focus on subjects like Botany, Zoology, Forestry; age limit: 21 to 32 years.

3. Combined Defense Services Examination (CDS)

  • Purpose: For recruitment into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), Air Force Academy (AFA), and Officers Training Academy (OTA).
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Written Exam: Objective-type questions (English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics).
    • SSB Interview: For selected candidates.
  • Eligibility: Graduation or equivalent; age limits vary depending on the academy (e.g., 19-24 years for IMA, 19-23 years for INA).

4. National Defence Academy Examination (NDA)

  • Purpose: For recruitment into the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force through the National Defence Academy (NDA).
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Written Exam: Objective-type questions (Mathematics, General Ability Test).
    • SSB Interview: For those who clear the written exam.
  • Eligibility: 12th pass with Physics and Mathematics; age limit: 16.5 to 19.5 years.

5. Indian Economic Service (IES)/Indian Statistical Service (ISS) Examination

  • Purpose: For recruitment to the Indian Economic Service (IES) and Indian Statistical Service (ISS).
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Written Exam: Includes papers on Economics and Statistics.
    • Interview: For candidates who pass the written exam.

6. Combined Medical Services Examination (CMS)

  • Purpose: For recruitment of medical officers to various government departments like Indian Railways, Central Health Service, etc.

    • Written Exam: Objective-type questions (General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology).

7. Engineering Services Examination (ESE)

  • Purpose: For recruitment to various engineering services in sectors such as Indian Railways, Telecommunication, Public Works, Defense, etc.

    • Main Exam: Descriptive-type questions on engineering subjects.

8. Indian Postal Service Examination

  • Purpose: For recruitment to the Indian Postal Service.

9. Special Class Railway Apprentices (SCRA) Examination

  • Purpose: For recruitment to the Indian Railways as apprentices.
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Written Exam: Objective-type questions (Mathematics, General Knowledge, and General English).
    • Personality Test: For those who clear the written exam.
  • Eligibility: 12th pass with Physics and Mathematics; age limit: 17 to 21 years.

10. Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) Examination

  • Purpose: For recruitment to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) like CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, etc.
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Written Exam: Objective-type questions (General Knowledge, Reasoning, General Studies, English).
    • Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET).
    • Interview: For selected candidates.
  • Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree; age limit: 20 to 25 years.

11. CISF AC LDC Examination

      • Chest: 81 cm (minimum 5 cm expansion) for men.
      • Vision: The candidate must have normal vision with a minimum of 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye.
    • LDC (Lower Division Clerk):
      • Age Limit: Generally, 18 to 27 years.
      • Educational Qualification: 12th pass or equivalent from a recognized board.
      • Typing Speed: The candidate must have a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute in English (or 30 words per minute in Hindi).

12. Combined Geoscientist and Geologist Examination

  • Purpose: For recruitment to the Geologist, Geophysicist, and Chemist services in various departments of the Government of India.
  • Exam Pattern:
    • Written Exam: Objective and descriptive-type questions on subjects like Geology, Geophysics, and Chemistry.
