Geo-Scientist/Geologist exam

The Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Exam is a competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India. The exam is held annually to recruit candidates for various positions in the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB).

The exam is conducted in three stages:

  1. Preliminary exam: The preliminary exam is a computer-based test consisting of multiple-choice questions. The exam is held for a duration of 2 hours and carries a total of 200 marks.

  2. Main exam: The main exam is a written exam consisting of descriptive type questions. The exam is held for a duration of 3 days and carries a total of 600 marks.

  3. Personality test: Candidates who qualify the main exam are called for a personality test, which is held for a duration of 45 minutes and carries a total of 200 marks.

The exam is conducted for the following posts:

  1. Geologist, Group A
  2. Geophysicist, Group A
  3. Chemist, Group A
  4. Junior Hydrogeologist, Group B

Candidates who hold a Master degree in Geology, Applied Geology, Marine Geology, or any other related subject are eligible to apply for the exam. Candidates must also be between 21 to 32 years of age.

The exam is highly competitive, and candidates need to have a strong foundation in the core subjects of geology, geophysics, and chemistry to qualify for the exam.

UPSC Geo Scientist Prelims Result 2023 out at upsc.gov.in

Union Public Service Commission has declared UPSC Geo Scientist Prelims Result 2023 on March 3, 2023. Candidates who have appeared for Combined Geo‐Scientist (Preliminary) Examination, 2023 can check their results through the official site of UPSC at upsc.gov.in.

The written preliminary examination was conducted on February 19, 2023. Those candidates who will qualify the examination are eligible to appear for the main examination. The main examination will be conducted on June 24 and June 25, 2023.

UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist exam ie. UPSC GSI is the National Level Competitive examination conducted by UPSC under the Indian Govt. The full form of UPSC GSI is Union Public Service Commission Geological Survey of India exam. The selected candidates work under the Geological Survey of India (GSI) i.e. Ministry of Mines and Central water board (CWB) under the Government of India for Grade ‘A’ and Grade ‘B’ posts.

The main aim of this examination is to recruit the candidate for the post of Category I -Geologist, Chemist, Junior Hydrologist, and Geophysicist under the central government. The examination is the initial port of entry into the Union Public Service Commission.

Eligibility

Geologist Group A : Passed / Appearing Master Degree Geological Science or Geology or Applied Geology or Geo-Exploration or Mineral Exploration or Engineering Geology or Marine Geology or Earth Science or Any Other Equivalent Degree.

Geophysicist Group A : Passed / Appearing Master Degree in Science in Following Stream Physics / Applied Physics / Geophysics / Marine Geophysics or Any Other Equivalent Degree.

Chemist Group A : Master Degree in Science M.Sc Chemistry / Applied Chemistry / Analytical Chemistry Passed / Appearing in Any Recognized University in India.

Junior Hydro geologists : Passed / Appearing (Final Year) Master degree in Geology or Applied Geology or Marine Geology or Any Equivalent Degree in Any Recognized University in India.

Age Limit (as on 01-01-2019) 

  • Minimum: 21 Years

  • Maximum: 32 Years

  • Age relaxation is applicable as per rules

Examination Pattern

1) Written examination: Geologist & Geo-Scientist written exam consists of 5 papers.

The examination conducts for various posts under 2 categories.

Category -I for Geological survey of India (GSI)

Category -II for Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). In this examination all the subjects will be of conventional (essay) type with English language question papers.

i. Candidates competing for selection to the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Junior Hydrogeologist will be required to appear in all the subjects mentioned against respective category above.

ii. Candidates competing for selection for both the posts of Geologist and Jr. Hydrogeologist will be required to appear in all the subjects mentioned against Categories 1 and 4 above.

iii. If any candidate failed to appear in any one or more of above papers, meant for written examination for selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, their candidature shall stand rejected and part of written examination appeared by them shall not be evaluated and counted for any purpose.

2) Interview/Personality Test: The Test carries 200 marks.  The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of competent and unbiased observers who will have before them a record of their career. The object of the interview is to assess their suitability for the posts for which they has competed.

Special attention will be paid in the Personality Test to assessing the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application, integrity of character and aptitude for adapting themselves to the field life.

3) Document Verification: Verification of eligibility conditions with reference to original documents is taken up only after the candidate is qualified for Interview/ Personality Test.

1. WRITTEN EXAM

Geologist & Geo-Scientist written exam consists of 5 papers.

The examination conducts for various posts under 2 categories.

Category -I for Geological survey of India (GSI)

Category -II for Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). In this examination all the subjects will be of conventional (essay) type with English language question papers.

The commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination. Subjects, maximum marks details given below :

i. Candidates competing for selection to the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist and Junior Hydrogeologist will be required to appear in all the subjects mentioned against respective category above.

ii. Candidates competing for selection for both the posts of Geologist and Jr. Hydrogeologist will be required to appear in all the subjects mentioned against Categories 1 and 4 above.

iii. If any candidate failed to appear in any one or more of above papers, meant for written examination for selection to the post of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, their candidature shall stand rejected and part of written examination appeared by them shall not be evaluated and counted for any purpose.

Penalty for wrong answers (in Objective Type Papers): Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.

  • The exam has two papers. 

  • All the questions are multiple-choice based.

  • The exam paper will be in English.

  • The candidates will get four options, out of which they have to select the correct one.

  • Negative marking of one-third of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.

  • If a question is left blank i.e. not answered, there will be no penalty for that question. 

  • One will get 2 hours to attempt each exam.

UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Main Exam Pattern

  • The exam consists of three papers, all of which are subject-specific.

  • Each paper is of 200 marks. 

  • One gets 3 hours to attempt each paper.

  • The questions and answers will be in English only.
