Eligibility Criteria: HP TET is conducted for various teaching categories, each with specific eligibility requirements:
- Junior Basic Training (JBT) Teacher (Primary Teacher for Classes I-V):
- Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) or equivalent.
- Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 45% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, in accordance with NCTE regulations.
- Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed).
- Graduation and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.
- Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) in Arts, Medical, and Non-Medical (Classes VI-VIII):
- TGT (Arts):
- B.A./B.Com. with at least 50% marks and a 1-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed).
- Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.A.Ed.
- TGT (Non-Medical):
- B.Sc. (Non-Medical) with at least 50% marks and a 1-year B.Ed.
- Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.Sc.Ed.
- TGT (Medical):
- B.Sc. (Medical) with at least 50% marks and a 1-year B.Ed.
- Senior Secondary (or equivalent) with at least 50% marks and a 4-year B.Sc.Ed.
- Shastri Teacher:
- Shastri with at least 50% marks from an institution recognized by the H.P. Government.
- Language Teacher:
- B.A. with Hindi as an elective subject and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or a 1-year B.Ed.
- Punjabi and Urdu Language Teachers:
- B.A. with Punjabi/Urdu as an elective subject and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education or a 1-year B.Ed.

Selection Procedure:
The selection process involves a written examination specific to each teaching category. Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying marks to be considered eligible. Qualifying HP TET is mandatory for appointment as a teacher in Himachal Pradesh; however, it does not guarantee employment.
Exam Pattern:
Each HP TET examination consists of 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), each carrying one mark. The duration for each paper is 2 hours and 30 minutes. There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
